Matching the Fence to the Home’s Exterior
In neighborhoods like Woodleigh Woods, fencing becomes part of the property’s overall appearance rather than a separate feature.
The fence line sits close to neighboring homes, remains visible from the street, and runs directly alongside the home’s siding in several areas. Because of that, color selection mattered just as much as the fence structure itself.
The homeowners wanted privacy, but they also wanted the fence to feel integrated with the home rather than added afterward.
Instead of using a standard all-white vinyl fence, the project used a two-tone design with tan privacy panels framed by white posts and rails. The tan panels coordinate with the home’s siding, while the white framing keeps the fence looking bright and defined. The result is a fence that blends naturally with the property while still creating a strong visual border around the yard.
Working Around Trees and Grade Changes
Odenton’s soil conditions are generally heavier and more clay-based than the sandy ground closer to the Chesapeake Bay. That makes proper post-installation especially important during Maryland’s freeze-thaw cycles.
Posts for this project were installed in concrete footings below frost depth to improve long-term stability.
The fence line also included two additional site challenges: mature trees near the property line and grade transitions across the backyard.
Tree roots can significantly affect post placement, especially along older property lines where root systems extend beneath the planned fence run. During the site measure, post locations were adjusted where possible to avoid major root zones while still maintaining proper panel spacing.
The grade changes across the backyard required stepped fence sections rather than continuously angled panels. Stepping the fence helped maintain consistent rail lines and preserved the clean visual pattern created by the two-tone design.
The Build — Reinforced Rails and Matching Gates
The fence uses tongue-and-groove vinyl panels set into routed rails for a more secure fit and cleaner overall appearance.
Each rail also includes an internal steel reinforcement insert to help reduce long-term sagging across wider panel spans.
The matching gates continue the same two-tone design used throughout the fence line, with tan panels framed by white rails and posts. Black metal hinges and latches provide contrast against the white framing and allow for proper gate adjustment where the grade changes slightly.
Flat vinyl caps were installed on each post to create a finished appearance and help reduce moisture intrusion at the top of the posts.

Frequently Asked Questions — Vinyl Fence in Odenton, MD
What colors does vinyl fence come in?
White, tan, khaki, gray, black, and wood grain finishes are all available, along with two-tone combinations. The most common two-tone approach pairs white or neutral rails and posts with a colored panel — tan, gray, or khaki — that complements home siding without committing the whole fence to a single color. We bring color samples to the site measure so you can evaluate them in context before committing.
Do I need a permit for a vinyl fence in Anne Arundel County?
Generally, no — a standard vinyl fence at 6 feet or under doesn’t require a permit in Anne Arundel County. Exceptions apply for corner lots, waterfront properties, and pool installations. When a permit is needed, applications go through the Land Use Navigator system online. We pull the permit, coordinate with the county, and request utility locates before any digging starts. The base application fee is $43 plus an amount based on project value.
How do you handle fence installation near tree roots?
We evaluate root spread during the site measure and adjust post locations to avoid root zones where possible. When a post needs to be placed near a significant root, we hand-dig rather than use a mechanical auger, which protects both the root system and the equipment. We’ll flag any situation where tree proximity genuinely limits post placement and discuss the options on-site before the build starts.
Can you match a two-tone design to existing siding or an HOA color palette?
Yes — matching to siding color is a common request, and we can work from a color specification if an HOA requires a particular approved palette. Odenton and Gambrills communities under HOA oversight sometimes specify permitted fence colors; we’ve worked through those approval processes in communities across Anne Arundel County. Bring your HOA documentation to the estimate conversation and we’ll confirm compliance before the permit application is filed.
