Fence installation in Brooklyn Park, MD, is not a weekend project you can wing. Anne Arundel County requires a building permit for most fence work, Miss Utility needs at least a 3-day notice before anyone digs, and the county’s residential code sets the frost line at 30 inches with a weathering classification of “Severe.” That mix of freeze-thaw stress and a real permit process is why fences installed by inexperienced crews start leaning by their second winter.
Here is what actually happens from your first phone call to the final post, and what the county expects along the way.
Do You Need a Permit for a Fence in Brooklyn Park?

Most fence projects in Brooklyn Park require an Anne Arundel County fence permit. The Anne Arundel County permit center states plainly that a building permit is required for a wide range of projects, and fences fall within that scope once they cross the county’s height threshold.
Anne Arundel County requires a permit for any residential fence over six feet tall, regardless of whether it sits in the front or back yard. We still confirm the current requirements with the permit center before any digging occurs on your property, since zoning overlays and community covenants can impose stricter limits on top of the county baseline.
Three situations automatically trigger a permit regardless of height:
- Corner lots. Brooklyn Park has dense residential streets near Governor Ritchie Highway and Church Street, where corner-lot visibility rules apply. The county requires corner-lot fences to preserve a clear sight triangle at the intersection, and the exact dimensions depend on the road classification and zoning district. We will confirm the specific triangle for your lot with the permit center before finalizing your layout.
- Pool enclosures. Any fence acting as a pool barrier must meet the county pool code, which we cover in a moment.
- Waterfront properties. Brooklyn Park sits on the Patapsco River side of the county, and shoreline properties are subject to additional review.
You can pull the permit yourself, but most homeowners would rather not. We handle the application, coordinate the inspector, and pull the paperwork under our MHIC license. If you would rather have us handle the permit, that is included in the estimate.
What Anne Arundel County Charges (and How to Apply Online)

The county publishes a current permit fee schedule that spells out what you owe. For a standard residential fence, expect:
- Minimum building permit fee: $86.00 for projects valued at $0–$3,000
- Non-refundable application fee: $43.00 added to every building permit
- Reinspection fee: $150.00 if a scheduled inspection is not canceled at least 24 hours in advance, or the inspector cannot access the site
That $150 reinspection fee is worth taking seriously. If the crew is not ready or the yard is not accessible when the inspector arrives, you pay again to reschedule. Coordinating access is one reason we prefer to be on-site during inspection windows.
Permits also carry an expiration. Under the county’s rules, a permit under which no work is commenced within one year after issuance shall expire. If you pull a permit and then postpone the project, that one-year clock is real.
Applications go through the county’s Land Use Navigator online portal. If you want to speak to someone directly, the permit center is reachable at (410) 222-7730 or permitcenterhelp@aacounty.org.
Realistic Timeline: From First Call
to Final Post
The fence installation timeline in Maryland isn’t a single number. It is a sequence of phases, and each has its own clock.
Estimate visit, 48 hours from your call. Jeremy or Jim walks the property, measures the runs, and talks through materials. You get a written quote before we leave.
Material selection and paperwork, 3 to 7 days. You pick the style and color. We finalize the drawing, submit the permit application through the Land Use Navigator, and file the HOA application if your community requires one. Both reviews run at the same time where possible.
Permit review. The county does not publish current processing times on public pages, so we quote based on recent projects rather than a fixed number.
Miss Utility locate, 3 days minimum. Utility marking is required before we dig. That window is not negotiable.
Installation, 1 to 3 days for most residential jobs. A standard backyard privacy fence typically finishes in one day. Larger runs, ranch rail installations, or automated gate installations take longer.
Final inspection and walkthrough. The county inspects the completed work. We do our own walkthrough the same day, checking gate latches, post plumb, and cleanup, then hand you the workmanship warranty. Ready to start your estimate?
Miss Utility, Property Lines, and Site Prep

Three things need to happen before a post hole is dug on your property. Getting them right the first time is the difference between a fence that lasts 25 years and one that lasts five.
Miss Utility Maryland, 1-800-257-7777. Maryland law requires a utility locate before any excavation. Call at least 3 days ahead. The service is free. Marker paint on your lawn shows where gas, electric, cable, and water lines run. Public utilities are covered by Miss Utility. Private utilities are not. That includes well and septic lines, invisible dog fence wires, irrigation and sprinkler lines, and any low-voltage landscape wiring. If you have any of those, tell us during the estimate so we can flag them.
Property lines and setbacks. Most homeowners think they know where their line runs. Many are off by two to six feet. We work from your recorded plat or a recent property survey, not a fence that was already there when you moved in. Anne Arundel County’s zoning code exempts fences from the standard building setback requirements that apply to structures, so the county does not enforce a fixed distance from the line. Even so, industry practice is to set the fence six inches inside your line so that nothing sits on your neighbor’s ground and so that a future survey never turns into a boundary dispute.
Site access. Gates need to be cleared, vehicles need to be moved, and dogs should be kenneled or brought inside. Trash cans should be out of the fence run. If a crew shows up and cannot get to the fence line, the day is lost.
If any of that feels like more homework than you signed up for, we will walk your property line with you during the estimate visit and mark it before we quote.
Why Local Experience in Anne Arundel County Matters
There is no substitute for a contractor who has already pulled fifty permits from the same building department. All Around Fence & Decks has been installing fences across Anne Arundel County for more than 25 years, under MHIC license #97820, with zero complaints on file with the state commission.
Our shop is in Pasadena, which puts us within 10 miles of most Brooklyn Park addresses. That matters when a gate hinge needs a warranty adjustment two years in, or when the inspector wants a small correction before signing off. We are not driving in from another county.
Jim and Jeremy are both on-site for every job. The person who measures your property is the person who oversees the installation. When the county inspector shows up, one of us is standing there.
If you want to talk through a project, request an estimate or call (443) 838-9374. We will come out, walk the property, and give you a written quote on the spot.
