Composite Fence

What Is a Composite Fence?

Wood fences, chain link fences, vinyl fences – these are the most popular types of fences in America. You might be surprised to learn that those aren’t your only options. There is another material known as composite fencing, and it could be exactly what you’re looking for. Read on to see what a composite is and determine if it’s right for you.

What Is Composite Fencing Made of?

Composite fence pickets are made from recycled plastic, wood and resin. They look like natural wood, but they have the long-lasting durability of resin and plastic. Composite fences require less maintenance than wood fencing, and they’re more environmentally friendly. Nevertheless, composite is not ideal for every property.

Is a Composite Fence the Same as a Vinyl Fence?

Composite fencing and vinyl fencing are both manufactured, but they come from different materials. Vinyl is made from PVC, just like the PVC pipes used for plumbing. Composite is made from wood and plastic. Both options are superior to wood in many ways, but they are not the same.

Benefits of Composite Fence

Composite fencing uses mostly recycled materials, making it better for the environment than newly milled timber. Composite fences do not need to be stained and sealed like wood fences, which can save you money in maintenance costs. The pickets are densely constructed, so they can stand up to precipitation and UV rays. Many composite fences last 30 years or more, and they look just as nice as wood.

Drawbacks of Composite Fences

Despite the benefits of composite fencing, there are some downsides to consider. Composite is not the cheapest fence material available, though it is less expensive than many wood fences. The wood within the composite is subject to expanding and contracting, just like natural wood. This may happen at a slower rate than it would with a basic wood fence, but the material still doesn’t have the longevity of vinyl.

Also keep in mind that some HOAs have restrictions on the types of fence materials you can use. Since composite isn’t as popular as vinyl or wood fencing, there may be a chance it’s not approved in your area. We always recommend checking with HOA guidelines before installing a new fence.

Should I Get a Composite Fence?

Composite fencing is beautiful, durable and raising in popularity. However, it’s not as weather resistant or readily accessible as vinyl. And while both vinyl and composite fencing can look like wood, some homeowners still prefer the appearance of natural wood.
