Fence Upgrade Ideas for 2022

Want to modernize your fence and give it a wow factor? It doesn’t take much to make an old fence look like new, and this is a great way to personalize your property. Whether you want a functional upgrade or an aesthetic one, we’ve got options for you. Check out these fence upgrade ideas for 2022.

Mud Board or Rot Board at the Bottom

This is a functional fence upgrade that we highly recommend for wood fences. A mud board or rot board is a long board that runs along the base of your fence pickets. This serves several purposes. It protects the bottom of the fencing from moisture on the ground and mud, and it can also help preserve the pickets from rot, pests, etc.

If you have dogs, the mud board can block the base of the fence from getting scratched. And when you edge the yard as you mow, the board will protect the fencing from the string of the weed eater.

Fence Staining and Sealing

If you have a wood fence, you should get it stained every 3-5 years. This will help your fence look like new, and it will also extend the life of your fencing. The stain fills in the gaps that naturally form in the wood pores. Then the sealant on top of the stain shields the fence from water, UV rays and pests.

Cap and Trip Fence Topper

Cap and trim fencing has a high-end look with minimal upgrades. A horizontal board runs along the top of the pickets to “cap” the fence, and then there is a trim piece that runs right below it. This creates a clean line that many homeowners prefer over visible fence pickets.

Think of this like adding crown molding along your ceiling. It’s not necessarily from a functional standpoint, but it adds a nice finishing touch.

Fence Inserts for Chain Link Fences

If you have a chain link fence and don’t want to upgrade to a privacy fence, you can add a sense of privacy with fence inserts. These weave in between the chain mesh and make the fence look more solid. You could also add mesh screening along your fencing, but that is prone to coming off in windy weather. The fence slats should remain stable, and they come in a wide range of colors.

Fence Repairs for Broken Pickets, Leaning Panels, etc.

All the fence upgrades in the world won’t mean a thing if your fence is in disrepair. If you have a leaning section or broken pickets, prioritize those features first. Then you can work on the aesthetic components of the fence.

Trash Can Fencing to Hide Your Waste Bins

Are you tired of seeing your trash cans on the side or front of your house? A trash can fence will create a designated space for your waste bins to go, and it will make that area look intentionally decorative. You can get a fence that complements your other fencing, or you may prefer something that’s the same color as your siding. In either case, a fence is going to look better than exposed trashcans.
